Educating Africa - Sisonke

Based in the small coastal town of Port St. Johns in Pondoland in the Eastern Cape, this small school is run by local people. It aims at bringing life into education through poetry, music, drama, art and practical activities. The founders firmly believe that children are born with an innate thirst for knowledge and learning, which can quickly disappear when they enter a system based on tests and text books.

As a result, the school always strives to involve the whole community, and the parents are asked to open their hearts and play an active role in their child's education. Traditional crafts are taught, and cultural stories are told by elders and music and rhythm imbue every day. A deeper understanding of nature and the world fills every subject - from measurement, to money, to science, to art - making the curriculum alive and meaningful.
